Benefit Concerts

The Archive of Women in Music depends on donations and volunteers. Many active musicians who have found material for their musical productions in the Archive want to give something back–such productions are often only possible thanks to the musical gems that are now only to be found in the Archive of Women in Music. We therefore offer the hoffmanns höfe hall as a concert space where interested musicians can perform their works. Would you like to actively support the Archive of Women in Music? Please get in touch.

Last benefit concert

The Benefit concert “Guitar Ladies” organized by, and starring, one of our managing board members, Heike Matthiesen, was a huge success: The hall was packed despite the beautiful weather so, once again, we added more chairs to accommodate the large number of people. The HR and the Archive of Women and Music had organized this concert as part of the Musikland Hessen initiative.

Heike Matthiesen was in glorious form, performing a firework display of little-known guitar music by female composers. The audience was from Frankfurt, as well as surrounding areas. Some had never heard of our archives before and were delighted to be offered a tour through the archival space to explore some of our treasures.

Following works were performed:

Emilia Guiliani (1830-1850): Variazioni su Non più mesta di Rossini op. 5
Ida Presti (1924-1967): Segovia
Sylvie Bodorova (geb. 1954): Elegy | Plegaria
Madame Sydney Pratten (1821-1895): 4 Songs without words: Eventide – Forgotten (Impromptu) – Weary – Sadness | Carnival of Venice
Annette Kruisbrink (geb. 1958): Carnatic Interlude
Sofia Gubaidulina (geb. 1931): Serenade
Carmen Guzman (1925-2012): Tango para Billy | Vals No. 7 | Vals No. 5
Maria Linnemann (geb. 1947): Two elegic pieces  (dedicated to Heike Matthiesen) Elegia – Sospiro (Vals triste) | Soledad | Adio mi amor (dedicated to Heike Matthiesen)
Annette Degenhardt (geb. 1965): Variations on Es zieht eine dunkle Wolke

We would like to thank all who helped out and would like to give a special “thank you” to all who donated so generously to the archives.
