Call for scores: Brixworth Music Festival | 3. Komp.-Wettbewerb für Komponistinnen

The Brixworth Music Festival, England, is pleased to announce the third international competition for women composers.

We are looking for a work for solo organ with a duration of 6-8 minutes. The work should in some way reflect on and celebrate the music of Isabella Leonarda (1620-1704), in commemoration of her 400th anniversary. The competition is open to any female composer of any nationality and there is no age limit for entrants. The following prizes will be awarded: First prize: £1,000, Honorable Mention

The prize-winning work will be played by Ian Clarke at the next Brixworth Music Festival during a lunchtime concert on 10th May 2020. (https://ianclarkemusic.wixsite.com/music/about-ian )

The jury comprises the following members:
Vivienne Olive: Composer, Professor of Music Theory in Nuremberg, retired; Joint Artistic Director of the Brixworth Music Festival
Gwion Thomas: Singer and Joint Artistic Director of the Brixworth Music Festival
Ian Clarke: Organist, Harpsichordist and Conductor (and other members of the of the Brixworth Music Festival, as appropriate)

The short list will be sent to our external adjudicator for the final decision:
Judith Weir: Composer and Master of the Queen’s Music

The committee of the Brixworth Music Festival reserves the right to find replacements for absent jury members.

Conditions of entry

  • Only one work may be entered.
  • The entered work may not have previously been performed or published.
  • Performance material must be supplied by the prize-winner.
  • Any instructions should be in English.

Closing date: 31st January 2020
Prize winners will be announced at the end of February 2020.

Please send the score of the work in PDF form to:

Please include the words 2020 Competition Entry in the title of your email

  1. Only the title and the duration should appear on the work. The composer’s name must not appear on the work.
  2. Clear performance instructions in English must be included if this is not clear from the score.
  3. In a separate email please send the following information:
  • a) title of work
  • b) details of entrant (name and address)
  • c) a short biography
  • d) one recent photograph
  • e) proof of payment of the entry fee

The entries (anonymous) will then be forwarded to the jury.

Legal Information:

  • a) Submitted scores will not be returned.
  • b) By taking part in the competition the participant agrees to abide by the conditions
  • c) The copyright remains with the composer.
  • d) The Brixworth Music Festival reserves the right of documentation, is entitled to make sound and visual recordings of all concerts and may use this documentation to publicise information about this competition. Sound and visual recordings may be used without charge in the media and to this end may also be copied, distributed, performed, broadcast and/or made available to the public. In the case of commercial use the participant will, however, receive appropriate remuneration.
  • e) There is no right to appeal..
  • f) The decision of the jury is final.
